The Van Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the

“Great Pumpkin”  Growing   Contest

Seeds are available for sale NOW at the Chamber office – 170 West Main!
  The seeds should be started indoors on or before May 10 and should be planted in the ground by May 22.

The Contest will run through October 11, 2014 for the Van Oil Festival where the huge pumpkins will be on display with winners announced at that time.

Early Voting – April 28 to May 6

Residents of Van will select two new council members, a new mayor and also decide on two alcohol issues – whether beer and wine can be sold within the Van City limits for off-premise consumption and if mixed beverages can be sold in restaurants by food and beverage certificate holders.

Early voting will be at the Van Annex Building on South Maple from 7 AM – 7 PM. 

Voting on May 10 at Van Community Center at 310 Chestnut Street – Van

Candidates for Van City Council are incumbents Al McCarty and Jack Perry.

Challengers Don Smith and Ted Mitchell Jr.  

Dean Stone will run unopposed for mayor.

The Van Chamber of Commerce will be holding their monthly meeting Tuesday, May 6, @ 11:45 am at Tele’s Mexican Food restaurant. (Actual meeting begins at 12 Noon – 11:45 allows you time to get your food ordered, if you wish to do so.)
YOU are invited! We’ll talk about what’s happening in the Van area and what the Chamber can do to help!

BBB – Free Document Shredding – May 2, 2014

  On Saturday, on Friday, May 2 at Brookshire’s in Van from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., BBB will host “Secure Your ID Days” – a free document shredding event that helps people protect themselves from identity theft.  –  businesses and individuals can shred up to three hundred (300) pounds of paper per vehicle at no charge. 

    Ark La Tex Shredding, STS Electronic Recycling and Allied Waste Systems are generously donating their shredding, data destruction and cardboard disposal services for the event. 

    According to Javelin Strategy and Research, the number of identity fraud victims rose to over 13.1 million people in 2013 and cost $18 billion dollars.

Don’t know what to shred and what to keep? Here’s a quick run-down:
* If you don’t need it, shred it – responsibly.
    * Keep bank statements, expired insurance policies, employment applications for three years. 
   * Keep invoices, cancelled stock certificates, payroll records, withholding statements for seven years

Texas Armed Services Scholarship Now Available

AUSTIN – State Representative Dan Flynn has announced a scholarship opportunity for eligible High School students within House District 2. The Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP) was created to encourage students to participate in Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) programs at civilian colleges.
In addition to the eligibility criteria, a student must enter into an agreement requiring a four year commitment as a member of the Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, Texas State Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Merchant Marine or a commissioned officer in any branch of the armed services of the United States. A student may receive up to $10,000 for the 2014-2015 academic year and dependent on funding available, students may receive up to four years of awards.
To be eligible, a student must meet academic criteria including:  
  • Be on track to graduate high school in a Distinguished Achievement Program or International Baccalaureate program.
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Ranked in the top third of the graduating class.
  • SAT score of 1590 or ACT score of 23.
To receive the initial scholarship, a student must:
  • Be appointed by a State Representative or State Senator or by the Governor or Lieutenant Governor.
  • Enroll in an eligible Texas institution and an eligible ROTC program
  • Commit in writing to:
    • Remain in ROTC for four years.
    • Graduate within five years.
    • Enter Guard service or accept a commission with the armed services             within six months of graduation from college.
    • Meet program physical fitness requirements.
“The opportunity to serve your state and your country in this capacity is truly a privilege and an honor,” reflects Representative Flynn. “I would encourage any student eligible for this scholarship to apply and take full advantage of the opportunities made available for those who serve.” Representative Flynn has nominated a student from within House District 2 each year the scholarship has been offered.
If you are a constituent of House District 2, meet the criteria above, and are interested in this scholarship, please send a cover letter and proof of academic eligibility to Amanda Robertson. Applications must be received no later than Wednesday, the 10th of July, 2014.
